Happy Flag Day!

Did you know…?

  • The first US flag was authorized by Congress on June 14, 1777. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this date a holiday in 1916.

  • The original “Star-Spangled Banner” that inspired Francis Scott Key to compose our national anthem in 1814 is still preserved in the Smithsonian to this day.

  • The first time an American flag flew atop Mount Everest was 1963.

  • Remember grade school history? Each flag has exactly 50 stars for the 50 states, and 13 stripes for the original 13 colonies. Red represents courage, white stands for purity, and blue for truth & reverence.

  • There are special procedures for disposing of old US flags – contact your local Scouts.
