The weirdest diamond fact you’ll ever read

FYI: If you swallow a diamond, it probably won’t show up on an x-ray.

Jewelry X-RayHow do we know? (No, we haven’t tried it.) But a jewel thief in Canada did.

Richard Matthews swiped a 1.7 carat diamond from a jewelry store in Ontario last week, putting an artificial one in its place and popping the $20,000 “pill” for safekeeping.

The store’s surveillance cameras caught the act, and later police x-rays also revealed a pair of cubic zirconiums adorning his internal scans. These lower-quality stones appeared on the images, while the exquisite facets of a fine diamond reflect the rays, making it almost impossible to detect.

By the way – authorities are holding the thief in an observation cell, until the gems are recovered.

Beau Sancy Diamond sells for nearly $10 million

The pear-shaped, double-rose cut diamond weighing 35 carats is one of the world’s oldest and most famous cut diamonds. For centuries it has been passed down through the royal families of Europe, including some of the most famous (and infamous!) historical characters.

If gemstones could talk, the Beau Sancy would describe its exotic origins in the Golconda mines of 16th century India – one of the richest gem deposits in the world. Its tale would trace through four centuries of royal coronations, weddings, wars and revolutions.

The anonymous buyer took home the prize from a Sotheby auction in Geneva, Switzerland, for nearly double the reserve estimate. It may be the first time in almost half a millennium that the historic stone has passed out of the hands of royalty.

Rare “Mirror Diamonds” Up for Sale

A rare Mughal-era necklace containing nearly 100 carats of fine Indian diamonds is reportedly up for auction soon. According to the Israeli Diamond Industry:

“The 28-carat central stone of the necklace is thought to be the largest table-cut, or mirror, polished diamond in existence, and the five stones combined may very well be the largest set of table-cuts in the world.”

The emperors of India’s Mughal kingdom – one of the richest the world has ever seen – were responsible for many of the world’s greatest jewel treasures. Starting in the 1500′s, they exploited the gem wealth of India’s greatest mines, such as the Golconda Mines, where these polished diamonds may have originated.

Mirror Diamonds

Table-cut diamonds have a large central facet that magnifies the light entering the stone, making them some of the most pristine. Today, original mirror diamonds are scarce, since many large stones have been cut down over the years, and newer technologies have made the style less common. The piece is expected to bring around $20 million.

Fancy Blue Diamond Goes Through the Roof

Did somebody say recession? Apparently no one told that to the buyers at Sotheby’s spring gem sale this week. The lineup of fancy colored diamonds included a 3 1/2 carat marquise-cut blue diamond in a platinum ring setting by Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany Fancy Blue DiamondThe turn-of-the-century prize stole the show, shattering the auction estimate of half a million dollars by 500% – and setting the record for a fancy blue diamond at a modest $2.5 million!

So what do we think? This piece had all the right stuff:

  • Good diamonds are always in high demand and there are more discriminating buyers than ever
  • Colored diamonds are all the rage, from celebrities to the Main Street buyer
  • Pastel colored gems – especially blues – are one of the year’s strongest fashion trends
  • Vintage is hot! The classy antique look is here to stay

So, what’s not to love?

Also on offer were fancy yellow and pink diamonds; vintage emerald-cut diamonds; and designer necklaces and pearls. Nearly all of the items sold for more than their appraised value, making this spring sale the biggest haul ever for the renowned auction house.
